Abstract

10% of all mental health attendances to accident and emergency (A&E) departments are due to suicide attempts or suicidal ideation, with many of these being related to depression. Accurate judgement of risk is of crucial importance as it dictates management. This article recommends a practical approach to risk assessment and management of the suicidal patient in A&E. We also discuss the ‘next steps’ for the patient beyond the A&E.
